Ziro Festival of Music, or ZFM in short, is perhaps one of the best-known music festivals in India, which takes place in the stunning surroundings of Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh. The festival lasts for about 4 days and has music bands from various parts of the country as well as abroad playing.
The festival arena is spread over a 5-acre land, with the daily schedule of musical bands playing from 11 am in the morning till 11 pm in the night. It is rightly called a festival, because it is not just about music, but the food, the art and craft of North-east, the workshops, and much more.
We were really excited to have an opportunity to design the arena for ZFM 2024. It was an opportunity to develop different structures for the Night & Day stage, Food pavilion, workshop area, VIP Lounge, a visitors centre, information kiosk, and crafts-bazaar — as distinct built-forms — and yet try to create an ambience which would blend everything together as one.
The most fascinating part was the fact that the structures were to be built using local species of bamboo — Apatani bamboo primarily — and some brought in from neighbouring districts of Assam. The artisan teams were from the local Apatani tribe, highly skilled traditional craftsmen.
