A demonstration unit at Wonder Grass Campus, Nagpur — showcasing the possibilities of bamboo design and construction in a live, built environment.
A retreat on a farm or a second home tucked away from the concrete jungles of sprawling metros — the farm-retreat unit designed by Wonder Grass is elegant, sustainable, and affordable.
The unit showcased here is a compact 500 sq. ft. in all, which has a sleeping area at mezzanine floor. The roofing profile has a steep slope — to create a larger volume inside for better thermal comfort and additional space for the mezzanine floor.
The footprint is small at 12 ft × 21 ft, yet it serves well for a weekend getaway for a family with children. The unit can be integrated with solar power and a rainwater harvesting system to make it grid-free.
Views of the bamboo farm house — exterior, interior, and the surrounding landscape.
The walls are woven bamboo mesh plastered with mud or cement mortar from inside, while the exterior is kept as exposed woven-bamboo mat surface coated with CNSL (for better weather protection).
The door and windows are conventional wooden panels. For windows, one can even use aluminium sliding-type windows.
