'Bamboo Man of India'

A man with extraordinary design talent, acute intelligence and heart full of empathy — fondly remembered by bamboo artisans he worked with as Guruji across India, even today after 25 years of his sad and early demise in 1998. One of his friends and colleagues put it eloquently when he said Vinoo was a pragmatist of rare type who believed 'There are no ideals, except that we choose to ignore the aspects of the real'. He was inspired by the works-and-thoughts of Gandhi–Vinoba and Kumar Appa.

Starting his career as an architect in Mumbai, he soon realized that something isn't right — work happening in cities like Mumbai and Delhi felt too detached, disassociated from what was happening in India once you step out of the city limits. What was (and still is) being built in the cities wasn't for or about India. He left his already well-established practice in Mumbai, and went on a search for what India is all about — travelling, living and working in rural India, in villages and hamlets, for almost a year.

In a small span of 52 years, he left an indelible mark on the contemporary Indian socio-architectural moment. What kind of buildings, what materials to build with, building for whom — these were the critical questions being raised by some practitioners and thinkers in the early 70s and 80s, when the euphoria of modernity of Corbusier–Kahn–FLW slowly settled down. I believe Vinoo was one of its early proponents who discarded a flourishing practice in upmarket Mumbai to embrace and explore the aesthetics of India, its geo-climatic and cultural specificities that defined us as Indians.
